Blood and body fluid cleanup
A fall, a medical emergency or an injury can leave more blood than a household cleaner can handle. When it has soaked in, a cleanup company is the safer choice.

When to call rather than clean it yourself
- The blood or fluid has soaked into carpet, a mattress, upholstery or wood.
- There is more than a small spot, or it has spread across a room.
- You do not know whose it is or whether the person was ill.
- It happened at work, where staff would otherwise be asked to clean it.
Cleaning is not the same as disinfecting
The CDC describes cleaning as removing most germs from a surface, and disinfecting as killing the germs left afterward (CDC).
A disinfectant only works if it suits the germ and stays wet on the surface for the time on its label. Never mix products; some combinations give off harmful gases.
Ask the company which disinfectant it will use and why.
At a business
California's bloodborne pathogens standard, Title 8 section 5193, covers any job where workers may be exposed to blood. Employers with exposed staff need a written exposure control plan (Cal/OSHA).
If your staff have no such plan or training, keep them away from the area and call a cleanup company.

Questions to ask the company
- Is the company on the California Department of Public Health's list of registered trauma scene waste management practitioners? CDPH posts that list.
- What exactly will be removed, cleaned and disinfected, and what will be left for you to decide on?
- Will they give you a written scope and price before the work starts?
- Will they take photos and keep paperwork that an insurer or the state compensation board may ask for?
- Can they set aside papers, photos and other personal things they find?
When you are ready, call
You do not need to know what kind of cleanup it is. Say what happened and where, and an independent company that works in the Riverside area will talk it through with you. Hiring them is your choice.
