Before the cleanup
Who cleans up after a death or a crime?
Not the police or the coroner. The owner or the family arranges it, usually with a specialist cleanup company.
When can it start?
Once the police and the coroner's staff have released the home or vehicle.
Do I need to be there?
No. Someone you trust can let the company in, or the company can collect a key.
Can I go into the room before it is cleaned?
It is better not to. If you need something from the room, ask the company to get it.
Cost and payment
How much does it cost?
It depends on the size of the area, the materials and how long it was before the person was found. What affects the cost explains.
Does insurance pay?
Sometimes. Call your insurer before the work starts and ask.
Can victim compensation help?
After a crime in a home or vehicle, CalVCB may reimburse cleanup by a CDPH-registered company. The Riverside County District Attorney's claims unit can help with the forms.
Do I pay this website?
No. This website may be paid by the company or the referral network.
The work
Is bio hazard cleaning the same as crime scene cleanup?
Yes, broadly. Both mean removing blood, body fluids and contaminated materials, then disinfecting.
Will anything be thrown away without asking?
Contaminated materials have to go. Agree beforehand which personal items the company should set aside.
Does the company rebuild afterwards?
Some do, some do not. Ask whether new flooring or drywall is part of the price.
When you are ready, call
You do not need to know what kind of cleanup it is. Say what happened and where, and an independent company that works in the Riverside area will talk it through with you. Hiring them is your choice.
